About

Musicians and audiences all over the Midwest agree that Indianapolis native David Linard plays the piano with the soul and musicality of a seasoned veteran.

David graduated from Indiana University’s Jacob’s School of Music in 2012 with a BM in Jazz Studies and a BSOF in Music and Business as a Herbert Scholar.  In the fall of 2013, David will start his masters at Juilliard.

David studied classical piano with Joel Harrison, artistic director of the American Pianists Association from 2007 to 2008.  He studied jazz piano with Luke Gillespie while at IU. In the summer of 2010, David was one of the featured artists in the Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival just outside Chicago, where he studied with Rufus Reid, Curtis Fuller, David Baker, and Nathan Davis. In 2010 and 2011, he studied jazz with NYC pianist Michael Weiss, pianist for the Vanguard Band. David has also studied with Grammy nominee Michael Spiro.

David leads the David Linard Trio, which will release its first album soon as a part of the Owl Studios Emerging Jazz Artist Project Award, which they won in September 2011. The group consists of bassist Nick Tucker and drummer Ben Lumsdaine. David composed all new music for the album, with inspiration from artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Esbjorn Svenson Trio, Herbie Hancock.

Besides his trio, David plays with the Jamey Aebersold Quartet, the Sophie Faught Quartet, Sarah Stivers, and wherever he is needed around town. David has recorded with several artists, including the Jeff McLaughlin Quartet (Blocks), the Matt Nowlin Orchestra (the Good News), the Latin Jazz Collective (Que Sopresa!). In 2011 he received a fellowship from the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation.

David has played for private functions for Meryl Streep, Quincy Jones, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, and has been a featured performer for the Louisville Orchestra’s Magic of Music series.
